Wilson Street was named after the Wilson family who were early settlers in the area before Oakville was a village. The three Wilson brothers, Robert, William and John all had long careers as sailors. Robert Wilson became master of the
Lady Colborne, the second ship built at Oakville launched in May 1830. Robert is remembered for his help to escaping slaves. Captain William Wilson whose house is pictured above, lived next door
to his brother Robert on Navy Street.
